 Surgical HMO 3+ Positions

The Royal Melbourne Hospital employs Surgical HMOs (3+) who rotate through four 13-week speciality rotations.  These positions are suitable for PreSET HMOs who are intending to apply for SET in 2010.

Am I eligible to apply for an Surgical HMO 3+ position?

To be eligible for these positions you must fit into one of the following catergories:

  • Australian trained residents who will have successfully completed a full HMO2/3 resident year by Feb 09 - majority of rotations being surgical.
  • Overseas trained resident who will have successfully completed a minimum of 24 months  Australian experience (not including observer positions) by Feb 09 - majority of rotations being surgical.  Overseas candidates must have AMC MCQ and plan to sit the Clinical in 2009.


What is the criteria for HMO 2/3 interviews this year?  How are interviews arranged?  What format are interviews this year?

Soon after you submit your online application your a Medical Workforce Consultant will review your application and if suitable will send you an email with a link to book your interview using our electronic interview schedule.

Telephone interviews may be considered although attendance in person is recommended.  Interviews will be conducted with the Director of Junior Surgical Education and one Medical Workforce Consultant.   

 

What streams and rotations are available to Surgical HMOs 3+ at RMH and how are they allocated? 

All surgical specialites are available to Surgical HMO 3+.

  • Emergency
  • ENT
  • Ophthalmology
  • ICU
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Surgical Oncology - Peter Mac
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery / OMFS
  • Trauma
  • Urology
  • Wangaratta Emergency

As we aim to provide a challenging surgical year for our more experienced HMOs we offer some opportunity to gain registrar rotations in the following:

  • Vascular Registrar
  • Neurosurgical Registrar
  • General Surgery

A rotation preference form is sent with your letter of offer.  There is space on the form to write comments to support your rotation preferences. 

How much leave are HMOs given and how is it allocated?
Full time HMO's accrue 5 weeks annual leave per year.  Leave preference forms are completed along with your rotation preference form and all leave is distributed prior to commencement. 

 

Is there an HMO society?
For a small  fee you get full access to one of the best RMO clubs in Victoria with the RMO quarters boasting over night beds, lounges, TVs, kitchen, computer/internet access and a pool table.  The RMO club arranges monthly social meetings (with bar tab) and larger annual events such as the Valedictory Dinner.
