The Burnet Clinical Research Unit (BCRU) on Ward 3 North is a joint facility between RMH and The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, which is dedicated to translational clinical research. The BCRU's major activities centre on the early, preclinical diagnosis, prediction and prevention of type 1 diabetes in collaboration with the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology (Associate Professor Peter Colman).
Ongoing national and international studies and clinical trials include the Melbourne Pre-Diabetes Family Study, the Australian BabyDiab Study, the Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium, the Melbourne School Pre-Diabetes Screening Program, the National Institute of Health (NIH) TrialNet Natural History Study, and intranasal insulin vaccine trials.
Ward 3 North is also home to the departments of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (Professor Len Harrison) and Dermatology (Dr George Varigos).
