Professor Anthony Costello MD FRACS MBBS Head of Department of Urology
Professor Anthony Costello is Director of Urology at Royal Melbourne Hospital. His major research interest is prostate cancer, the most common male malignancy in the Australian community. In the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne, Professor Costello has established the Prostate Cancer Research Centre, a new laboratory dedicated to basic and translational research aimed at improving outcomes for prostate cancer patients.
In addition to the basic research being performed under his direction, he also supervises a very strong clinical program, one of the largest in the state of Victoria, based at The Royal Melbourne Hospital , for all areas of conventional prostate cancer treatment both in early stage and for advanced disease and all other urological conditions. He has over 100 published papers in peer reviewed journals, has been an invited guest speaker in many countries on the topic of prostate cancer and treatment of local disease and of advanced metastatic prostate cancer. He is the Course Director of the National Prostate Cancer Symposium held in Australia on an annual basis over the past decade. Since 1991 he has been Chief or Associate Investigator for numerous different clinical trials and is a member of the International Trials Group, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas. He is a co-founder and Director of Velacor Therapeutics, a Biotech drug discovery/development company which is commerciallising the drug discovery program of the Department of Urology and Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne. He is also founder of the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre at Epworth, which endeavours to improve research into prostate cancer and help provide the general public and clinicians with information about the disease.
Professor Anthony Costello was the first Professor of Urology in Australia. He has a long history in development of new technology in urological surgery. He was the first urologist in Australia to develop the greenlight laser prostatectomy, which removes obstructing prostatic tissue, and has published the only randomised controlled trial of this novel techinique compared to the gold standard of tranurethral resection of prostate (TURP). Since 2003, Professor Costello has pioneered the introduction of robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy surgery for curing localised prostate cancer in Australia and has published extensively on this subject.
Professor Costello is one of only a few Australian Urologists dedicated to scientific research in urology.
