The Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation was established in 1992 to raise money for neuroscience research at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Currently the Foundation raises money to support research, clinical and teaching activities in the neurosciences at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The Melbourne Neuroscience Centre, situated at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, is an international leader in the treatment and research into brain disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, brain tumours, dementia and multiple sclerosis, and the centre treats over 10,000 patients each year.
The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees and has the status as a tax deductible gift recipient.
The Melbourne Neuroscience Centre embraces the philosophy that excellence in clinical services is inextricably linked to excellence in research. The neuroscience research programs underpin the clinical activities in neurology and neurosurgery. The centre has a major involvement in translational research that links neuroscience laboratory research in The University of Melbourne and associated research institutes with the neuroscience clinical activities in The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Some examples include the laboratory and clinical programs in brain tumours, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. The research is funded through a variety of sources, including peer review grants from the NHMRC, the Cancer Council and the National Heart Foundation, as well as industry support for pharmaceutical trials and other collaborations. The Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation governs the administration and funding of much of the research.
Our world renowned research takes place in the following areas:
- Brain Tumour
- Stroke
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Epilepsy
- Neuro-Ophthamology
- Peripheral Neuropathy
