Jane Bell Scholarship
The Royal Melbourne Hospital Graduate Nurses’ Association has established the Jane Bell Fund to commemorate the contribution to Nursing and Nursing Education made by Miss Jane Bell OBE during her term as Lady Superintendent of (the later Royal) Melbourne Hospital (1910-1934).

Jane Bell was a visionary for the advancement of the nursing profession. She recognised the importance of nursing education for nurses throughout their entire professional lives. She demonstrated extraordinary leadership qualities throughout her long and dedicated nursing career. Many of her innovations continue to be relevant to nurses currently practising almost a century after they were initiated.

A grant is awarded at intervals to a Registered Nurse who has either completed the Three Year Nurse Education Program at The Royal Melbourne Hospital or Royal Melbourne Hospital and Associated Hospitals’ School of Nursing or who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to nursing excellence in nursing practice at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The successful applicant will be one who wishes to undertake a course of study in an Australian University, or other approved Institution, or may be used for a travel grant towards an approved study tour, or for an appropriate project. The area of study should encompass an aspect of adult nursing. It is envisaged that the proposed project, tour or study will either enhance the body of nursing knowledge and directly impact upon patient care outcomes.

Qualifications
A Registered Nurse (Division1) as described above with at least 3 years of Post-Registration in nursing.

Allowance
The value of the grant will be up to $10,000 and is to be taken up in 2012-2013 and it may be awarded to one or more applicants.

Conditions
Tenure of the grant will normally be expected to commence within twelve months of the announcement of the award and be completed within two years of commencement.

The successful recipient is expected to undertake a position in an appropriate area of nursing within Australia for a period not less than twelve months on completion of tenure.

The recipient shall prepare a report on the study program or project undertaken, make appropriate references to new knowledge gained, and forward a copy to the Honorary Secretary of The Graduate Nurses’ Association within three months of completion of the study program or project. The report should be written in a format suitable for publication.

Applicants must be resident in Australia.

Prior to the receipt of scholarship monies, the recipient must agree to a date and forum for presenting/reporting the outcomes of their learning experience to The Royal Melbourne Hospital Graduate Nurses’ Association. The Royal Melbourne Hospital Graduate Nurses’ Association reserves the right to seek repayment of scholarship monies in the event the recipient does not comply with this criterion.

Additional Information
The next Jane Bell Scholarship will be awarded in 2012.
