Transcultural & Interpreter Service

Melbourne Health's Transcultural & Interpreter Services provide an interpreting service to assist you in communicating with staff at anytime during your stay. 
 
Melbourne Health has a strong commitment to servicing patients from a culturally and linguitically diverse background (CALD).   Interpreting Services at Melbourne Health provide highly qualified professional interpreters to facilitate the communication between health professionals and their patients via Telephone Interpreting or Face-to-Face Interpreting.

Interpreters are available in more than 200 languages including AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language). 

On-site Interpreters available at Melbourne Health are:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese  (Cantonese & Mandarin)
  • Greek
  • Italian 
  • Turkish
  • Vietnamese  
     

Please tell us when you make your appointment or on your admission that you need an interpreter. It is also important you tell us in advance if you need to cancel or rebook your appointment. You can do this by ringing the Outpatient's Appointment Desk on 9342 8901 and asking for a telephone interpreter. 

Patients wishing to book an interpreter can do so at the time of making or confirming their appointment.  Bookings are only accepted through hospital satff and must not be made directly by patients.

If an interpreter in unavailable to assist at your appointment, our staff can contact a telephone interpreter service 24 hours a  day (including after hours, weeekends and public holidays) to help you communicate with us.
